How to wash your hair with extensions

Washing your hair with extensions might feel a little different at first but, once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature. To keep your extensions soft, silky and long-lasting, it’s all about gentle care, the right products and the perfect technique.

How often should you wash your extensions?

We recommend washing your hair no more than 2–3 times a week. Why? Unlike natural hair, extensions don’t produce oils from the scalp so overwashing can strip them of moisture, leaving them dry and prone to tangling.

If you’re working out, swimming, or exposed to heat or pollution, you might want to rinse more often but just remember to treat your hair gently every time.

Essential steps to washing your hair extensions

Step 1: Choose the right products

Not all shampoos are created equal. When washing your extensions, make sure to use good quality products that are marked as safe for use with extensions.

Ideally, stick to the products recommended by your technician or by your hair extension supplier for best results.

Shampoos with harsh ingredients can weaken bonds or cause build-up, which can shorten the life of your extensions.

Step 2: Detangle before washing

Before you even turn on the tap, brush your hair thoroughly with an extension brush or wide-tooth comb.

Start at the ends and gently work your way up to avoid tugging at the bonds. This helps prevent matting during the wash.

Step 3: Wash gently

When you step into the shower, tilt your head back in the shower and let the water flow downwards. Never flip your hair over. This keeps your extensions from tangling or matting at the roots.

1. Wet your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water.

2. Apply a small amount of shampoo to your palms, then gently massage it into your scalp using your fingertips (not your nails!).

3. Avoid scrubbing or rubbing the bonds - just let the lather gently cleanse the scalp and let it run through the lengths.

4. Rinse well, letting the water run in the direction of your hair growth.

Pro tip: If you’ve got thicker extensions or lots of bonds, wash in sections to make sure everything is cleaned properly.

Step 4: Condition with care

Apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends only and never on or near the bonds. This keeps the attachment points clean and secure.

Leave the conditioner on for a couple of minutes, then rinse thoroughly with cool or lukewarm water to seal the hair cuticle and add shine. Ensure all product is thoroughly washed out of hair before leaving the shower.

Step 5: Pat dry - don’t rub!

Gently squeeze out excess water and pat dry with a soft or microfibre towel. Avoid rough towel drying or flipping your hair upside down, as this can cause tangling at the root.

Step 6: Always dry fully

Never go to bed with wet hair or extensions as this can cause matting and damage while you sleep. Generally, always try and blow-dry the root area thoroughly, especially around the bonds. You can let the lengths air dry if you'd like, but the scalp and bonds should be completely dry to prevent slippage or matting.

Don’t forget to use a heat protectant conditioning spray before using any hot tools like hairdryers!
