Love the idea of gorgeous clip-in extensions but not ready to splash out on a professional fitting?

You can make your own seamless set at home, mixing colours and experimenting with styles, all without committing to anything permanent. Best of all, you can pop them in and out whenever you like, no salon visit required.

Here's everything you need to know to make your own, from what to buy through to keeping them looking their best once they're done.

Why make your own clip-ins?

DIY clip-ins give you a lot more freedom than a pre-made set. You can choose exactly how many wefts to use, blend two or three shades for a natural dimension, and build them to the thickness that suits your hair.

They're also a great way to try out a new length or colour before committing to something more permanent, and once they're made, they last just as well as a shop-bought set with the right care.

What you'll need

• Human hair wefts (real Remy hair), available in various lengths, shades and styles from our Natural Ratio Weft or Double Drawn SuperWeft range
• Snap clips
• Other things you might need: Scissors, a measuring tape, a sewing needle and thread to match your hair colour

As a rough guide, most people need between 120g and 150g of hair for a full head set, though this depends on your natural hair thickness and how much extra volume or length you're after. You'll find everything you need to create your own clip in extensions in our fitting tools collection.

Step by step

1. Line up your wefts to the width you'd like each clip-in piece to be.
2. Trim any excess from the sides and from the machined weft at the top.
3. Sew a snap clip onto each weft and you're ready to go.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Placing clips too close to the ends. Sew your clips a little in from the edges of the weft so there's less strain on the bond when you clip in and out.
• Forgetting to test the fit. Before finishing all your wefts, clip one in and check it sits comfortably and blends well, then use it as your guide for the rest.

Caring for your DIY clip-ins

Weft tape-in extensions can be curled, straightened, washed, dyed and reshaped, so once your clip-ins are made you can style them just like you would your own hair. To keep them looking their best for longer, wash them sparingly, use a heat protectant before styling, and store them somewhere flat or on a hanger to avoid tangling between wears.
